In the weeks leading up to the 2016 presidential election, hundreds of thousands of dedicated supporters would show up at Donald Trump’s campaign rallies and voice their utter contempt for Hillary Clinton by chanting “lock her up,” obviously referring to her illegal activities during her time as Secretary of State. Now, as conservatives across the country are starting to renew their calls for Clinton to be thrown behind bars, the failed democratic presidential candidate is speaking out, claiming that Trump and his team are demonstrating a gross abuse of power.
During a recent interview with Mother Jones, Hillary Clinton argued that if the Trump administration decides to move forward with an investigation into her alleged misconduct, it would represent a “politicization” of the United States justice system and an unconstitutional “abuse of power.”
Clinton’s remarks were in response to a question about Attorney General Jeff Sessions, who is apparently weighing whether or not to appoint a special counsel to investigate “the Uranium One deal and suspected criminal business dealings connected to the Clinton Foundation.” (Related: Hillary Clinton took $145 million from the Russians to sell out the U.S. uranium supply to America’s enemies.)
Clinton said that such an action would be “a disastrous step into politicizing the Justice Department.”
“If they send a signal that we’re going to be like some dictatorship, like some authoritarian regime, where political opponents are going to be unfairly, fraudulently investigated, that rips at the fabric of the contract we have, that we can trust our justice system,” Clinton argued.
The argument that Donald Trump and his allies would be “politicizing” the United States justice system by launching an investigation into what appears to have been massive amounts of corruption inside of the State Department is both foolish and nonsensical. If anything, the President and Attorney General Jeff Sessions would be demonstrating that they support the rule of law, and want the American justice system to work the way it was intended to.
Furthermore, does Hillary Clinton support the idea of the Department of Justice launching an investigation into her former opponent, Donald Trump, over potential collusion with the Russians during his 2016 campaign? If so, then wouldn’t she be doing the same exact thing that she is accusing Jeff Sessions of doing if he does decide to appoint a special counsel the investigate the Uranium One deal? By her own logic, she is “politicizing” the justice system as well, “where political opponents are going to be unfairly, fraudulently investigated.”
It’s also worth noting that while Hillary Clinton now complains about the Trump administration’s “abuse of power” and how they are starting to resemble an “authoritarian regime,” not once did she say the same about former president Barack Obama, who really was dragging America closer and closer to a tyrannical state.
Back in 2014, Barack Obama channeled his inner Karl Marx when he famously declared that he was not going to wait for Congress to act, and that he would take action on his own whenever possible. “I’ve got a pen and I’ve got a phone,” he said, “and I can use that pen to sign executive orders and take executive actions and administrative actions that move the ball forward….”
Of course, this was only one out of the many times that Barack Obama warned that he would bypass Congress and take unconstitutional executive actions if it didn’t cooperate with him in the advancement of his agenda. Was Hillary Clinton concerned about an “abuse of power” and the establishment of an “authoritarian regime” then? Not at all, because she is a political hack who doesn’t care nearly as much about maintaining a “fair” justice system as she does about saving her own ass.
