When Republican lawmakers and a few others on the Democratic side of the U.S. Capitol Building chanted “U-S-A! U-S-A!” at one point during President Donald J. Trump’s first State of the Union Address this week, it was too much for amnesty-loving, race-baiting Rep. Luis Gutierrez, D-Ill.
He got up and stormed out of the chamber, as other Democrats patted him understandingly on the shoulder.
Trump was in the process of talking about his signature political philosophy — “America first” — by, among other things, mentioning how tens of millions of American citizens revere our country’s traditions and values, including reverence for the Capitol Building itself along with our form of government.
That kind of talk is just unacceptable, foreign, and — if you hear him tell it — “divisive” to Democrats like Gutierrez. And yet it shouldn’t be, because he calls himself an American too, and not only that, but he’s a member of Congress.
The shift in the Democratic Party — from a party that championed “the little guy and gal,” the average Joe and Jane American, Main Street instead of Wall Street to one that now despises white people, the Constitution, and every traditional American value you can think of — has been historic. And revealing.
“The art of politics always used to be getting your opponents to actually oppose motherhood, apple pie, and the American flag. And now Democrats are just embracing that,” said The Daily Wire editor Ben Shapiro on Fox News’ “Fox & Friends” program Thursday morning.
“This is not about 1950s America,” he continued. “This is about a gap created by the hard left in the United States which opposes all of these unifying institutions.”
Trump’s constant mentioning of America during his speech — dozens of times — his reference to showing respect for the National Anthem, his constant praising of American workers, and similar rhetoric all served as triggers to Democrats, not applause lines. In fact, most of them remained seated throughout the entire speech; even when Trump talked about historically low black and Hispanic unemployment, black and Hispanic Democrats sat there stone-faced. Their incessant Trump hate is really America hate; they are merely projecting it onto Trump. But the vast majority of Americans don’t agree with them, they side with the president: A CBS News poll in the immediate aftermath of the SOTU address, which was viewed by some 50 million people, the most since 2010, 80 percent said Trump was trying to unify, not divide, the country, while 75 percent said they liked his speech. (Full disclosure: The pollster oversampled Republicans because they were more likely to tune in; still, three-quarters and 80 percent are solid majorities; that said, The Hill reported, “Still, Trump outperformed among all these groups, with 97 percent of Republicans, 72 percent of independents and 43 percent of Democrats saying they approve.”)
For his part, Shapiro believes that Democrats are dooming their party to permanent minority status by constantly bashing America, Americans, and the country’s traditions and values.
“[Trump] did a good job mentioning a lot of things that unify Americans. Among them, things like the police, military and the national anthem and the flag,” Shapiro concluded. “And Democrats were sitting for those things or deriding that. Good luck in 2018 if that is your strategy.”
To Democrats, these mentions were merely signs of racism and bigotry — ‘dog whistles’ to Trump’s white supremacist base. So we can’t even be patriotic anymore, as far as Democrats are concerned, because to do so is to tout white power and control while denigrating minorities, an absurd notion.
The sad thing is that Democrats are playing to their voters, which means there are significant numbers of Americans who believe the same things they believe. Let’s hope Shapiro is right and their numbers are going to dwindle in the months and years ahead.
If they don’t, we’re in for some rough times; you can’t reconcile with people who literally hate you and consider you a racist and a bigot just for being proud of your country.
