A temporary housing facility for illegal aliens in Houston has been abruptly shuttered by the Biden regime following reports that living conditions were “unbearable.”
The warehouse, owned by the National Association of Christian Churches (NACC), was originally designed for disaster services. On April 1, however, it was transformed into a holding facility for illegals due to a massive border influx under Resident Biden.
Immigrant advocate groups had raised concerns about conditions at the shelter, as well as NACC’s unfamiliarity with “unaccompanied” children. The final straw was when a U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) staffer dropped dead at the facility the night before it was shuttered.
“[The girls] were more treated like merchandise rather than treated as human beings,” claims Cesar Espinoza, executive director of the migrant civil rights organization FIEL.
After the facility was first opened, Espinoza toured it and reported back that it was “filled just with cots.” The girls housed there were not allowed to get up unless it was to use the shower or restroom. Since there was no dining space for the girls to eat, meals were brought to them on their cots.
According to Espinoza, the “desperation” in these girls’ faces was “unbearable and incredible.”
And ABC News report claimed that at times the girls, who ranged in age from 13 to 17, were told that they need to use plastic bags for a toilet because there was not enough staff present at the facility to accompany them to the restroom.
In NACC’s defense, the group says such an incident only happened once after the lights had already been turned off for bedtime.
When questioned about the closure, HHS told The Epoch Times that the facility was only ever intended to be a temporary measure. It was thus closed down, the group says, to “ensure continuity of care under conditions that meet our strict standards.”
HHS added that about 130 of the 450 girls who were living at the facility “already have plans to be unified with a sponsor.” The rest have been relocated to the Carrizo Springs Influx Care Facility or other nearby emergency intake sites where beds “have become available.”
Jose Ortega, founder and president of NACC, told a different story to the Houston Chronicle. According to Ortega, HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra personally “begged” him to take the girls and sign a $4 million contract.
“I’m a pastor,” Ortega says. “We were not looking for a contract. We were not applying for a contract for us to make money – this was thrown on us.”
According to the latest figures, the Biden regime is spending about $60 million per week to shelter illegal alien children who unlawfully cross the border from Mexico into the U.S. All of this money is being robbed from American taxpayers.
More than 18,600 illegal children were apprehended after crossing the border in March alone. Right now, about 18,800 illegal children total are being housed at various HHS facilities.
Last weekend, China Joe used the word “crisis” to describe the situation, a first for the regime. Up until that point, Beijing Biden and his lackeys had avoided using that word because it made Hunter’s dad look bad.
“Biden thinks he is growing his support base,” joked one commenter at The Epoch Times about the influx of illegal children. “After what he put these kids through, I’ll bet they all vote GOP.”
“People are treated like this at many nursing homes,” wrote another, highlighting the total lack of concern about American citizens who are being abused. “Why not open up the White House for new residents?”
