The administration of President Joe Biden is reportedly processing thousands of Haitian illegal immigrant “family units” and releasing them into the United States.
A crisis has developed on the southern border in recent weeks due to the sudden surge of thousands of mostly Haitian illegal immigrants. According to Acting Chief Raul Ortiz of the U.S. Border Patrol, as of Monday, there were nearly 13,000 illegal immigrants camped out in Del Rio, Texas. (Related: Over 11,000 illegal immigrants are camped out under a bridge in Texas – and they’re growing by the day.)
Ortiz added that some of the single adult men who crossed the border will be expelled via Title 42 of the United States Code. This allows the federal government to expel persons who have recently been in a country where a communicable disease is present, such as the Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19).
But Title 42 expulsions do not cover unaccompanied minors and family units who seek asylum. Family units that aren’t driven away immediately are processed and then released into the country with notices to appear before an immigration judge sometime in the future.
It is commonly known that most migrants who are processed this way rarely show up to their appointed hearings. For a vast majority of cases, these migrants experience zero repercussions for breaking the law.
Despite this well-known fact, Biden’s federal government is continuing to process the family units and others exempted from Title 42 expulsions and sending them through into the U.S.
This current wave of Haitian migrants began coming to the U.S. after the assassination of former Haitian President Jovenel Moise back in July. The assassination sparked off a wave of civil unrest in the country. This situation was made worse after a 7.2 magnitude earthquake hit, destroying nearly 140,000 buildings and homes and killing more than 2,000 people.
In the past two years, the number of Haitian illegal immigrants apprehended attempting to cross the border was in the low thousands. This year alone, nearly 30,000 Haitians have already been caught. The number of migrants who enter the U.S. is expected to rise significantly before the year ends.
The vast majority of the migrants are camping in Del Rio, a small city of fewer than 35,000 people. There is some debate over how many migrants are within the boundaries of Del Rio. Ortiz said it was nearly 13,000, but a source who spoke with Fox News reporter Bill Melugin believes there are more than 14,000 migrants.

The situation in Del Rio has gotten so bad that the city’s mayor, Bruno Lozano, has declared a local state of disaster and said he has no choice but to close the toll booths on the International Bridge – a border crossing connecting the city to Mexico. The closure was done as a security measure to halt traffic across the bridge.
This ban on border crossings does not apply to “international traffic,” which the city in a statement said would “continue as normal.”
Lozano said he had earlier requested assistance from the state to help deter the arrival of even more migrants. He added that the city expects an additional 8,000 illegal immigrants to arrive in the coming days.
“Dire circumstances require dire responses,” said Lozano. “there’s people having babies down there, there’s people collapsing out of the heat. They’re pretty aggressive, rightly so – they’ve been in the heat day after day after day.”
This move forced Customs and Border Protection (CBP) to announce that the port of entry from Mexico into Del Rio would be temporarily closed.
“This temporary closure and shift is necessary in order for CBP to respond to urgent safety and security needs presented by an influx of migrants into Del Rio and is effective immediately,” said the agency in its statement announcing the closure of the International Bridge.
“It will advance and protect national interests and help ensure the safety of the traveling public, commercial traffic and CBP employees and facilities.”
