An analysis conducted by the Washington Post revealed that former President Donald Trump has received a 20 percent approval rating among Black voters and a 42 percent approval rating among Hispanic voters – a feat no Republican in 50 years has achieved.
Five polls conducted by different organizations in recent weeks show that Trump’s current approval ratings have improved from the 2020 elections, when the official count claimed he only received eight percent of the Black vote and 36 percent of the Hispanic vote.
“Both numbers — and especially that for Black voters — could set modern-day records for a Republican in a presidential election,” wrote Aaron Blake of the Washington Post. Trump has not yet secured the GOP nomination for the 2024 election, but his growing appeal, especially among younger minority voters, signifies a shifting tide that could catapult him back into the White House.
Younger voters in minority communities appear to be looking beyond political rhetoric and seeking tangible solutions to improve their lives.
Moreover, national polls conducted by the New York Times and Siena College show that President Joe Biden is now slowly losing his support from these minority groups. In 2022 and 2023 polls, Biden led Trump by 53 percent to 28 percent among registered non-White voters, far beyond the 70 percent voter support he had in 2020.
“Democrats have lost ground among non-White voters in almost every election over the last decade, even as racially charged fights over everything from a border wall to kneeling during the national anthem might have been expected to produce the exact opposite result,” wrote Nate Cohn of the New York Times.
Trump has been facing multiple indictments for years and just recently, his mug shot was taken. Democrats had hoped that these legal troubles would end Trump’s political career and that his mug shot would symbolize his downfall. However, the odds are all in favor of Trump.
And now, these poll outcomes, the consequences of multiple indictments and the mugshot are making the Democratic National Committee panic as Trump gains unexpected sympathy and support from the African-American community.
The groundswell of support transcended physical demonstrations and permeated social media platforms, where hashtags like “#Trump2024” gained significant traction among Black social media users. Many of Trump’s newfound African-American supporters believe that his experience with the justice system resonates with their own encounters with racial bias and unfair treatment. Some even find Trump’s booking made him more relatable.
This unexpected hype of Trump’s popularity among black voters has ignited mixed reactions across the political spectrum. Liberals, who initially anticipated Trump’s mug shot as a downfall, are now grappling with the unforeseen reality of their error.
Cohn even showed in his comment that people on the political left are confused because the policies and plans they thought would make minority voters stop supporting Trump and the Republican party are actually making more minorities support them instead.
Even Philip Bump, the Washington Post writer who made fun of Jesse Watters from Fox News for saying the mugshot “unintentionally created a bond between Donald Trump and black Americans,” now has to admit that the polls are not something to mock about.
