President-elect Donald Trump has nominated Indian American Sikh lawyer Harmeet K. Dhillon as the next Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Rights Division at the Department of Justice (DOJ).
Dhillon was born in Chandigarh in the State of Punjab, India. She and her family moved to the United States when she was two. She grew up in a traditional Sikh household in rural North Carolina before relocating to New York City.
Dhillon earned a bachelor’s degree in classical literature at Dartmouth College and pursued a law degree at the University of Virginia School of Law. Her professional career saw her rise through the ranks in prominent legal firms and advocacy groups, culminating in her role as an election lawyer fighting against electoral injustices.
On Dec. 9, Trump announced Dhillon’s nomination as the next Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Rights Division of the DOJ.
“I am pleased to nominate Harmeet K. Dhillon as Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights at the U.S. Department of Justice. Throughout her career, Harmeet has stood up consistently to protect our cherished Civil Liberties, including taking on Big Tech for censoring our Free Speech, representing Christians who were prevented from praying together during COVID and suing corporations who use woke policies to discriminate against their workers,” Trump posted on his social media account on the platform Truth Social.
The Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights is responsible for enforcing federal laws against discrimination, ensuring equal protection under the law, and maintaining the integrity of federal programs. Trump believes that nominating Dhillon for the position will protect the rights of all Americans, including those who have historically faced systemic barriers.
“Harmeet is one of the top Election lawyers in the Country, fighting to ensure that all and ONLY, legal votes are counted,” Trump wrote. “In her new role at the DOJ, Harmeet will be a tireless defender of our Constitutional Rights and will enforce our Civil Rights and Election Laws FAIRLY and FIRMLY.”
Dhillon has become the fourth Indian American to join the second Trump administration after the president-elect nominated Dr. Jay Bhattacharya as the next National Institutes of Health (NIH) director, Vivek Ramaswamy as one of the incoming Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) leaders and “America First fighter” Kash Patel as the next Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) director. In line with this, Dhillon expressed her honor and excitement about being nominated by Trump to assist with the nation’s civil rights agenda.
“I’m extremely honored by President Trump’s nomination to assist with our nation’s civil rights agenda. It has been my dream to be able to serve our great country and I am so excited to be part of an incredible team of lawyers led by Pam Bondi. I cannot wait to get to work!” she posted on X shortly after Trump made the announcement on Truth Social.
“I would not be here today without my amazing mother and brother’s support, and my beloved father Tejpal and husband Sarv, who did not live to see this day. I hope I will honor their memories, with God’s grace,” she added.
