Just days into President Donald Trump’s second term, media outlets and personalities are already exclaiming how exhausted they feel with his presidency.

This represents a stark contrast to the relative lack of complaints from these same media outlets and personalities during former President Joe Biden’s administration.

During Biden’s tenure, the media enjoyed what some have called a “four-year vacation.” Biden rarely gave interviews, avoided press conferences and was often shielded by aides who reportedly protected him from cabinet members, donors, pollsters and even top Democratic lawmakers, as per reports featuring statements from former White House aides, who revealed that the Biden team managed a “diminished” president and ensured he was rarely exposed to the same level of scrutiny that Trump has faced since his first day in office way back in 2017. But with Trump’s return, the media landscape has been flooded with executive orders, policy announcements and headline-grabbing actions. These include withdrawing the United States from the World Health Organization and the Paris climate treaty and reversing Biden-era executive orders and regulations. His administration has also declared an emergency at the southern border, ordered military personnel to secure it and begun mass deportations of illegal immigrants — a move that has already drawn both praise and criticism.

Journalists express feeling fatigued by Trump presidency

Media personalities, however, are struggling to keep up. Tara Palmeri of Puck lamented that day four of Trump’s presidency “feels like month four,” expressing hesitation to report on the news for fear of adding to the “deluge of Trump coverage.”

Susan Glasser of the New Yorker echoed this sentiment, listing Trump’s rapid-fire actions – from threatening trade wars with Canada and Mexico to pardoning Jan. 6 protesters – as evidence of the media’s growing fatigue.

The contrast between the Biden and Trump presidencies couldn’t be starker. Under Biden, the media often operated in a vacuum, with little breaking news or controversy to report.

Under Trump, every day brings a new bombshell, leaving journalists scrambling to keep pace. David Brooks of the New York Times quipped that the media had a “four-year hiatus” from covering Trump and is now “spelunking into the deeper caverns of Donald Trump’s brain” once again.

But the media’s exhaustion isn’t just about the volume of news — it’s also about the nature of Trump’s presidency. His bold, unapologetic style and willingness to challenge established norms have forced journalists to confront uncomfortable truths about their failures.

Trump has also capitalized on growing public distrust with mainstream media outlets, vowing to use his presidency to “save free speech in America” and slamming what he calls “disinformation” from the media elite. His landslide victory in 2024 has emboldened him, and his administration is moving quickly to implement a sweeping agenda that reflects his disdain for “woke” policies, global elites and the mainstream media.
