According to a report by the Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project (ACLED) and Princeton University’s Bridging Divides Initiative, “peaceful protests” associated with the Black Lives Matter movement happened in 48 out of 50 major cities in the U.S. However, contrary to the report from Princeton that participants in these protests “have not engaged in violence or destructive activity” – reports of burning, looting and murdering that emerge after these demonstrations appear to debunk this claim.
Based on the report authored by Dr. Roudabeh Kishi and Sam Jones, nearly every major city in the U.S. experienced rioting and violence – with the only two exceptions being Fresno, Calif. and Mesa, Ariz.
It also pointed out that political orientation and biased media framing both played a big role in how people perceived the Black Lives Matter demonstration to be. However, the idea that a large percentage of urban areas experienced rioting will linger in the general public’s consciousness for a longer period of time compared to the smaller number of more peaceful movements.
The report concluded by acknowledging the fact that rallies and demonstrations related to Black Lives Matter have erupted across the country – and state actors, non-government factions and counter-protesters are responding in kind. It also pointed out how the current administration is exacerbating the tensions in different ways which, in reality, is a response to the inaction of some city officials.
The May 25 death of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis, Minn. police officers triggered Black Lives Matter protests against systemic racism and police brutality. Mobs of protesters started off from simple protests to toppling monuments and memorials of Confederate historical figures, the latter action being condemned by Republican lawmakers.
Despite the blatantly hypocritical depiction of Black Lives Matter protests being “peaceful,” incidents that involve protesters hurting or killing civilians and damaging surrounding properties always accompany such movements – and these cannot simply be disregarded.
In Portland, considered the epicenter of Black Lives Matter protests, two notable instances of violence related to the protests were reported.
Former security officer and DJ Marquise Love, who attended Black Lives Matter protests in downtown Portland, was filmed on video beating Adam Haner in mid-August. The victim, who simply stepped in to stop an earlier assault, received serious injuries at the hands of Love. The perpetrator has since turned himself in to law enforcement custody.
Amid the protests in the city, “100 percent Antifa” Michael Reinoehl shot and killed Trump supporter Aaron Danielson on Aug. 29 – more than a week after Love’s assault on Haner. U.S. Marshals killed Reinoehl a few days after the shooting as they were attempting to apprehend him for Danielson’s killing.
Similar unrest caused by Black Lives Matter protests in some cities have gone out of control – prompting requests to deploy their respective State National Guard to help law enforcement. Take the case of Chicago, where a group of four aldermen have requested Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker to declare a state of emergency and send the Illinois National Guard to the city after increased unrest.
However, people have started fighting back against the violent Black Lives Matter mobs without having to wait for authorities.
The residents of Chicago’s Englewood community have had enough of chaotic Black Lives Matter riots, so they told protesters to leave as they saw the arrival of the protesters into the area as a harbinger of even more chaos. The residents’ effort bore fruit as the crowd of protesters eventually dispersed before any damage to property occurred.
Seventeen-year-old Kyle Rittenhouse, who was protecting businesses in Kenosha, Wis. from Black Lives Matter rioters, had to use his AR-15 rifle in self-defense. He shot and killed two of his assailants and wounded a third. Incidentally, the rioters shot by Rittenhouse were recidivists themselves – the two casualties were a pedophile and a domestic abuser, while the wounded one was a convicted burglar.
