Despite their political differences, former President Donald Trump lauded Democratic presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. (RFK Jr.) as a “very good man” whose “heart is in the right place.”
“He’s been very nice to me, I’ve actually had a very nice relationship with him over the years. He’s a smart guy, and a good guy,” Trump told Howie Carr during an appearance on the “Howie Carr Show.”
“He said, ‘Trump’s the greatest debater. Just don’t debate going against Trump.’ I was very honored by the fact he said that. I’m glad he feels that. But he’s a very good man, and his heart is in the right place.”
The real estate mogul-turned-chief executive also pointed out that the nephew of former President John F. Kennedy is “doing really well in the polls” against incumbent President Joe Biden.(Related: RFK Jr. likes his chances against Biden in 2024 presidential primaries.)
In response to Carr’s question about whether he and RFK Jr. had talked lately, Trump said: “No, I haven’t. I would, but I haven’t.”
“We have … a lot of things [in common], you know. He’s a common sense guy, and so am I. So whether you’re conservative or liberal, common sense is common sense,” he added.
The younger Kennedy likewise praised his Republican rival during his appearance on “The Joe Rogan Experience.” RFK Jr. told podcast host Joe Rogan that Trump has been successful at speaking to the American middle class on their biggest issues.
“The middle class has been wiped out in this country and nobody’s talking about it,” the Democratic presidential hopeful said. “I think that’s why Trump became so popular. He was the one guy talking to those people, and they’re angry because nobody’s listening to them.”
During the same appearance on Rogan’s podcast, RFK Jr. also warned that the wipeout of the middle class comes with dire consequences.
“If you don’t have a middle class, if you have large aggregations of wealth at the top and widespread poverty below, that foundation is too unstable to support democracy.”
RFK Jr. and Trump share several similarities. They share a hatred of the Deep State and are on the crosshairs of the mainstream media. Both candidates also espouse anti-establishment positions such as ending wars driven by the military-industrial complex and promoting free speech.
Given these similarities, many have been floating a possible electoral tandem between Trump and RFK Jr. in time for the 2024 presidential elections. However, the Democratic candidate himself quashed rumors of such a tandem in a tweet back in May.
“Just to quell any speculation, under no circumstances will I join Trump on an electoral ticket,” he tweeted. “Our positions on certain fundamental issues, our approaches to governance and our philosophies of leadership could not be further apart.”
RFK Jr.’s tweet reportedly followed a comment by former White House chief strategist and podcast host Steve Bannon about a potential Trump-Kennedy tandem. Back in April, the “Bannon’s War Room” host said RFK Jr. would be a good running mate for the real estate mogul in case former Arizona gubernatorial candidate and news anchor Kari Lake was unavailable.
“If [Lake is] not available to be Trump’s vice president, [RFK Jr.] would be an excellent choice for Trump to consider,” Bannon said. The erstwhile adviser to the Trump campaign said his suggestion purportedly received a standing ovation during a public appearance.
