White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre has dismissed any notion that President Joe Biden would pardon his son, Hunter Biden, who is facing felony gun and tax misdemeanor charges.
During a press briefing on July 27, Jean-Pierre emphasized that the matter is a personal issue for Hunter and that the Department of Justice (DOJ) is handling the case independently.
“I’m really not gonna say anything more than what I shared yesterday – this is a personal matter for Hunter, this is a personal issue,” Jean-Pierre said. “And as you know, this has been done in an independent way by the Department of Justice; it has been led by a Trump-appointed prosecutor; and I’m just not going to comment beyond what I said yesterday.”
The White House has maintained a hands-off approach regarding the legal troubles of Hunter, with previous statements affirming their support for him while redirecting inquiries to the DOJ and the presidential son’s legal team.
But Jonathan Turley, a George Washington University legal scholar, believes the president is going to pardon his son to absolve him of any federal investigation and legal consequences and use the opportunity to withdraw from the 2024 elections, thus ending his political career on a paternal note.
Recently, Hunter was set to plead guilty to two tax charges, with prosecutors recommending probation as a sentence. However, the plea deal fell apart in federal court when U.S. District Judge Maryellen Noreika refused to accept the revised agreement. The fallout has left the DOJ in a bind, torn between admitting that Hunter could evade future charges or pursuing a full prosecution, including charges under the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA).
Furthermore, the result of the three-hour-long hearing held on July 26 raises concerns that the legal issues of Hunter may become a political focal point during the 2024 election. If Noreika would not approve the plea agreement, Hunter could face a trial on the existing charges against him.
Noreika forced the DOJ to acknowledge that Hunter could still be charged as an unregistered foreign agent, similar to the charges brought against Paul Manafort in the past. This opens the possibility of exposing the alleged influence-peddling operations of Hunter and potentially landing him a lengthy prison sentence.
Meanwhile, in an exclusive interview with Fox News Digital, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) revealed the potential for impeachment proceedings against the president.
However, McCarthy clarified that any impeachment inquiries would only be considered if Congress encountered resistance to obtain the necessary information for their investigation. “If at any time, we weren’t going to be able to get the information we needed to progress through the investigation, then we would have to rise to the level of impeachment inquiry,” he explained.
In this case, Democrats need a new candidate for the upcoming election. If Joe were to step aside, it could clear the way for a new generation of Democratic candidates like Robert F. Kennedy Jr. who may have a better chance of defeating potential Republican candidates.
