Illegal immigrants from Haiti are now fleeing the city of Springfield, Ohio after President-elect Donald Trump’s victory over fears that they could be subjected to mass deportations.
According to YourNews, the migrants are purportedly leaving the city in large numbers. Trump has promised to bolster enforcement of immigration law when he assumes the presidency in January.
Home to about 60,000, the city located in central Ohio made the news following claims of Haitian migrants butchering a pet for food. The claims that went viral, coupled with the ensuing outrage, brought national attention to Springfield’s challenges in managing the influx of Haitians under outgoing President Joe Biden’s open borders policy. Several longtime Springfield residents attested to this exodus of Haitians, Barron Seelig among them.
“The traffic situation seems to be better now,” he told the Daily Caller. Seelig’s remarks referenced earlier accounts of Haitian migrants causing chaos on the streets of Springfield.
According to him, fears of raids by Immigration and Customs Enforcement and crackdowns by highway patrol officers appear to be driving the departures.
Another local who chose not to be named described difficulties renting moving trucks. They said many Haitians were renting U-Haul vans, presumably to leave the area. But even activists assisting the migrants are confirming the exodus.
“People are leaving,” said activist Margery Koveleski of the Haitian Community Alliance (HCA). She added that Trump’s election victory has fueled fears among the Haitian migrants in the city.
Koveleski, who helps migrants navigate government processes, continued that migrants still in Springfield now approach her for a different reason.
“Some folks don’t have credit cards or access to the internet, and they want to buy a bus ticket or a plane ticket, so we help them book a flight,” she explained.
HCA co-founder Jason Payen also seconded Koveleski’s remarks. According to him, the exodus is directly tied to Trump’s win in the recently concluded presidential election.
“People are fully aware of the election result, and that is why they are leaving,” Payen explained. “They are afraid of a mass deportation.”
The HCA co-founder recounted that several families have relocated to states like New Jersey and Massachusetts. At least three families he knew headed north to Canada.
During his presidential campaign, Trump pledged to enforce a stricter immigration agenda. He promised to end birthright citizenship for children of illegal immigrants, revive the Remain in Mexico program, hire more Border Patrol agents and continue construction of the U.S.-Mexico border wall. The president-elect also pledged to conduct the “largest deportation program in American history,” something the Haitian migrants in Springfield now fear.
Last month, Trump said he would revoke the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) designation for Haitian nationals. The revocation lined up with his plan to “bring them back” to their country of origin. The Biden administration has provided TPS to hundreds of thousands of Haitian nationals currently living in the United States, shielding them from deportation.
The departures have sparked mixed reactions in Springfield, YourNews pointed out, with some residents seeing the exodus as easing local challenges. Ultimately, the departures are a sign that the second Trump administration is dead-set on reversing the impact of the outgoing Democratic administration’s open borders policy.
