Trump hilariously suggests that Canada become the 51st STATE with Trudeau as governor

President-elect Donald Trump has suggested that Canada become the 51st U.S. state, with incumbent Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau serving as its governor.

Several sources confirmed this remark to Fox News, noting that the proposal followed Trump’s threat to impose tariffs on Canadian products. The incoming POTUS announced the tariffs as a punitive measure for Ottawa’s failure to secure the northern U.S. border from illegal drugs and illegal immigrants. However, Trump offered potential statehood to Canada if the 25 percent tariffs on Canadian goods would cripple Washington’s northern neighbor.

According to Fox, the exchange reportedly occurred Friday, Nov. 29 when the Canadian leader flew to Mar-a-Lago unannounced. He enjoyed a dinner with Trump together with other esteemed guests.

“The issues of tariffs, border security and trade deficits were front and center,” the outlet noted.

Two people at the table where Trudeau and Trump sat also noted that the U.S. president-elect, while cordial and welcoming to his guest, was “very direct when it came to what he wants.” Trump told Trudeau that Canada has failed the northern U.S. border by allowing large amounts of drugs and illegal immigrants from more than 70 countries to pass through. He also highlighted the U.S. trade deficit with Canada, estimating it to be more than $100 billion.

Trump warned that the tariffs would be levied if Ottawa cannot fix the border issues and trade deficit. But the prospect did not sit well with Trudeau, who lamented that it would kill the Canadian economy completely.

The real estate mogul replied: “So your country can’t survive unless it’s ripping off the U.S. to the tune of $100 billion?” Trump then followed up by suggesting that Canada become the 51st U.S. state, eliciting nervous laughter from Trudeau and the rest of the Canadian delegation.

Trump wants Canada to step up before Jan. 20

Trump continued by saying that while Trudeau could still be the governor of the hypothetical 51st state, the Canadian leader’s current prime minister title sounds better. Someone at the table then chimed in, telling Trump that Canada would be a very liberal state – a remark that triggered more laughter. The president-elect quipped back, suggesting that Canada could possibly become two states: one conservative, the other liberal.

Ultimately, the real estate mogul warned Trudeau that if the Canadian leader cannot handle his list of demands without ripping the U.S. off in trade, maybe Canada should really become a state or two and Trudeau could become a governor. “While sources say the exchange got many laughs, Trump delivered the message that he expected change by Jan. 20,” Fox News pointed out. The nearly three-hour conversation and dinner touched on other topics, with the Canadian delegation praising the reception as “very friendly and very positive.” Representatives for Trump and Trudeau did not immediately respond to a request sent for comment sent by the media agency.

But according to Breitbart News, Trump’s joke about Canada being the 51st U.S. state was partly a form of “payback for Trudeau making jokes at Trump’s expense in front of other world leaders in 2019.” Days after news of the exchange surfaced, the president-elect poked fun at the idea through a Truth Social post.

Trump uploaded an AI-generated picture of himself on top of a mountain with the Canadian flag flying to his left. “Oh Canada,” he captioned, making a subtle dig at the country’s national anthem.

“The history of U.S. attempts to conquer Canada is not a happy one,” Breitbart News stated. “[U.S.] President James Madison was the last to try in the War of 1812, and was rebuffed by British forces – who were themselves driven back when counterattacking in the United States.”
