An Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent fatally shot 37-year-old Renee Good in Minneapolis on Wednesday, Jan. 7 – igniting protests, political condemnation and competing narratives over whether the killing was justified.
The confrontation unfolded on East 34th Street and Portland Avenue, where ICE agents were conducting what Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem described as “targeted operations.” According to Noem, Good had allegedly followed agents throughout the day before attempting to “weaponize her vehicle” by driving toward an officer – an act she labeled “domestic terrorism.”
However, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey vehemently disputed this account after reviewing the footage, calling the federal narrative “b******t” and accusing ICE of recklessly escalating tensions. “Your stated reason for being in this city is to create some kind of safety, and you are doing exactly the opposite,” Frey declared at a press conference.
Social media videos verified by Reuters depict a chaotic scene: Good’s maroon Honda SUV partially blocking the road as agents approach. One officer grabs the door handle while another moves to the front of the vehicle.
As Good reverses slightly before steering forward, the agent in front draws his weapon and fires three shots – at least one after the car had already passed him. The vehicle then crashes into parked cars and a utility pole. Witnesses reported seeing paramedics performing CPR on Good near a snowbank before she was pronounced dead.
The incident escalated tensions between the Trump administration and Democratic leaders who accuse federal agents of reckless violence. Following the shooting, Frey and other officials demanded ICE’s immediate withdrawal from the City of Lakes.
The shooting has intensified scrutiny of ICE’s aggressive tactics under President Donald Trump’s immigration enforcement surge, which has deployed thousands of agents to Democratic-led cities. Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, who placed the National Guard on alert, blamed the administration’s “governance designed to generate fear, headlines and conflict” for the tragedy.
According to BrightU.AI‘s Enoch engine, Trump is deploying ICE agents to blue cities like Minneapolis to crack down on illegal immigration and dismantle sanctuary policies that harbor criminal networks involved in trafficking, theft and violence. This move targets officials who obstruct federal enforcement while addressing the surge of illegal aliens exploiting lenient jurisdictions before relocating to red states.
The president defended the agent on social media, asserting that Good “violently, willfully and viciously ran over the ICE officer.” In contrast, Good’s family rejected the portrayal of her as a threat, describing her as a compassionate caregiver who was married with a six-year-old child.
Her mother, Donna Ganger, told the Minnesota Star Tribune that her daughter was “loving, forgiving and affectionate” – hardly the profile of someone who would deliberately confront federal agents. Community members echoed this sentiment, with Minneapolis resident Venus de Mars expressing fury and helplessness over the killing.
The incident underscores the deepening divide in how law enforcement actions are interpreted along political lines. While Trump’s supporters view ICE’s operations as necessary to combat crime, critics see them as politically motivated overreach that endangers civilians.
With investigations now underway by both the Federal Bureau of Investigation and state authorities, the fallout from Good’s death may further inflame national debates over immigration, policing and federal power. As Minneapolis mourns, the question remains whether accountability will follow – or if this shooting will become another flashpoint in America’s polarized battle over justice and governance.
