Iran warned on Sunday, Nov. 1, that a renewed war with the United States could last longer than the previous round of fighting, army spokesperson Mohammad Akraminia said, according to Iranian state television [1].
Akraminia said the American president “would not be in a position to dictate the timing or the conditions” of any future conflict’s conclusion. The warning followed U.S. President Donald Trump’s remarks at a campaign rally in Iowa ahead of the midterm elections on Tuesday, Nov. 3, where he said he may have to give Tehran “the hammer” at an unspecified time.
U.S. media reported that Trump held a call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Saturday, Oct. 31, over whether and when to ramp up combat operations. Axios quoted one U.S. official and one Israeli official saying the leaders discussed the state of negotiations with Iran.
Netanyahu pressed Trump to strike Iran immediately after Tuesday’s U.S. midterm elections, while Trump was eager to let negotiations play out. Speaking to reporters on Sunday, Trump confirmed he discussed Iran with Netanyahu but would not elaborate.
Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps spokesperson Hossein Mohebbi said that “in a conflict with America, there are no geographical limitations; a vast theater has been defined for inflicting damage upon the enemy,” according to state television.
Iran’s security chief Mohsen Rezaei disclosed on Saturday that he had received a letter from U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance seeking to revive talks [1]. The Iranian official noted a more optimistic change in Washington’s stance, but added that he had yet to respond to Vance’s letter.
Since the war began, Iran has claimed control over the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global energy conduit, and has repeatedly targeted vessels attempting to cross without its authorization. Shipping data shows the strait normally accommodates 120 to 130 vessels daily. [2][3]
Anwar Gargash, diplomatic adviser to the United Arab Emirates’ (UAE) President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, said on Sunday that the Abu Dhabi hoped the exchanges would yield a breakthrough. Gargash nevertheless reiterated that the UAE was preparing for the worst, remarking that “ot is not the interest of the region to go through another round [of conflict].”
In Tehran, Mohadese, a 27-year-old health inspector, told AFP that the news was worrying but that there was nothing she could do about it. Meanwhile, 48-year-old vendor Ebrahim said there was no reason to be concerned as the Islamic Republic has been “at war for 48 years now.”
Diplomatic efforts to end the Middle East war have been punctuated by repeated threats from the U.S. and Israel as both countries hold crucial elections. Iranian officials said Iran remains prepared for both defense and diplomacy, while Trump said remaining targets could be struck quickly. Regional officials said they hope for a diplomatic breakthrough while preparing for the worst.
